DIRECTIONAL DRILLING & SURVEYING HISTORY
|
|
In 1929, H. John Eastman developed the first survey instrument which was know
as the "acid-bottle survey". Downhole surveying has come a long way from
lowering a vial of acid into a borehole and then measuring the angle of the etch
on the inside of the glass.
In 1931, Eastman developed the first single-shot survey instrument and a year
later the first magnetic multiple-shot survey tool and retrievable wedge or
"Whipstock" as it is known in the oil field. The combination of these tools made
controlled directional drilling possible.

Over the last four decades many companies have performed directional drilling
services and many claims of being the "first" but H. John Eastman is the founder
and grandfather of directional drilling and surveying in the United States.
